Iran seizes British boats

Iran has seized three British vessels and arrested more than five crew, an Iranian Revolutionary Guards spokesman said on Monday.

Massoud Jazaeri said: "This morning we got news that a number of foreign vessels entered Iranian waters without permission.

"Three boats were guided to Iranian shores and more than five crew were arrested."

He added. "As far as we know they are British and we are negotiating to know why they entered the waters."

For the time being, the British authorities have not reacted to the seizures.

Iran has had a number of disagreements with its neighbours over vessels in the Gulf that have strayed into foreign territory.

Last week Qatar said two Iranian fishing boats had violated its territorial waters in the Gulf, after Iran accused it of a deadly attack on an Iranian boat by a Qatari naval vessel.
