Activists to protest during Bush's visit

BERLIN Tens of thousands of pacifists and antiglobalisation activists geared up for protests yesterday on the eve of a visit by US President George Bush to Berlin to seek support for a tougher stance against Iraq.
More than 240 organisations, as well as officials from parties represented in the city and national governments, had signed on for rallies yesterday under the "axis of peace" slogan.
The choice of the motto is intended to counter Bush's controversial declaration earlier this year that Iraq, along with North Korea and Iran, formed an "axis of evil" that should be viewed as possible targets in the US-led war on terrorism.
Bush is expected to attempt to gain European backing for action against Iraq in a speech to Germany's lower house of parliament tomorrow, although European Union states have warned against hasty moves.
While Bush is expected to receive a warm welcome from Chancellor Gerhard Schrer, who has pledged "unlimited solidarity" with the US in its antiterrorism war, protest organisers say they will make their opposition to future military action against Baghdad loud and clear.
In a move unthinkable during the Cold War, participants are to include members of the Greens, junior partners in Schrer's ruling coalition, and the leftist Party of Democratic Socialism, which shares in power in the city government and is the successor to the party that ruled communist East Germany.
The conservative opposition has leapt on the protests to call the parties unfit for government and brand the officials taking part "ungrateful" after the decades in which the US guarded West Berlin's freedom against the Soviet threat with thousands of American soldiers.
An "axis of peace" alliance spokesman, Reiner Braun, said today's protest was not "anti-US".
