Uncertainty over future of Portuguese government

The Portuguese President has accepted the resignation of his Prime Minister Antonio Guterres. It follows a fifteen minute meeting at the Palacio de Belen during which the Prime Minister formalised the announcement he had already made to the people.

The shock move follows his socialist party's crushing defeat in municipal elections.

After the meeting Guterres refused to be drawn by journalists on what might happen next, saying he was not in a position to make any further comment.

It could potentially lead to early legislative elections.

Other politicians in the Socialist Party had said they would resign if the President let the Prime Minister stand down.
