Living dangerously：危険に生きます

Palestinian doctors say five civilians have been killed
by Israeli shells in the last few weeks.

パレスチナ人の医師の話では、この数週間で
イスラエル軍の攻撃によって、一般市民五人が死亡しました。


In the late afternoon,we joined Nasser Abu Khousa's children as they sto
od on the flat roof of their apartment block,pointing out the explosions

午後遅く、我々はナッサー・アブ Khousa の子供達に合流しました。
彼らは、爆発を指差して、アパートの平らな屋根の上に立っていました。


Five hit near the beach, close to the greenhouses.
Another five landed in the open fields.
The sand flies up, and a second or so later, the sound reaches you.

五発が温室に近い砂浜に着弾。
もう五発は空き地に着弾。
砂が舞い上がります。そして一、ニ秒後に爆発音が届きます。


After dinner it started again.

夜になり、夕食が済んだ直後、再び砲弾が飛んで来ました。


An hour later, Nasser Abu Khousa and I were chatting on the street
when we felt the latest explosion.

その一時間後、一家の父親 ナッサー・アブ Khousa さんと私は
新たに砲弾の衝撃を感じました。


And the shells fell, on and off, into the night.
夜の間も散発的な砲撃が続きました。


Just after dawn, Abu Khousa sent 10-year-old Tamir to school.
"I'm worried about my son, and all the children,"
he told me. "They could be hit at any moment."

夜が明けると十歳のタミーヤ君が学校に向かいました。
『息子のことも他の子供達のことも心配です。
いつ学校が砲撃されても不思議ではありませんから』



Intolerable situation：耐え難い状態

Leaving Gaza, we went to the hills overlooking this tiny strip of land,
to meet the Israeli army.

十日午後、私達はガザ地区を見下ろす丘の上でイスラエル軍を取材しました。
イスラエル軍はパレスチナからの攻撃に反撃しているだけだと言います。


Army spokesman Captain Jacob Dallal said Israel was responding to
Palestinian fire.

陸軍報道官大尉ジェイコブ Dallal は、イスラエルはパレスチナの攻撃に
反応しているだけだと言いました。


But was it acceptable for one of the world's most sophisticated armies
to be shelling areas where civilians live, putting lives at risk ?

世界最先端を誇る軍の一つが、一般市民が暮らしている地域を砲撃し、
一般市民の命を危険にさらすことは容認できると思いますか


"We can't have a situation where people living in this village here,
or that city over there, are under rocket fire," he said.
"And this is a border. The border has to be quiet."

イスラエルの村や街で暮らしている人達が
ロケット弾の攻撃にさらされるようなことがあってはなりません。
ここは境界線なんです。この地帯の平穏を守る為に
パレスチナも責任を果たさなければなりません


For now, neither side is backing down.

今の所、双方とも引き下がろうとしません。


The rocket makers say they are fighting Israel's occupation of their
lands. Israel says it has no other option but to stop the rockets being
fired at its people.

ロケット弾を作っている男達はイスラエルによる占領と戦っていると主張し、
イスラエルはハマス率いるパレスチナ自治政府がロケット弾の攻撃を食い止め
られず、イスラエルの殲滅を訴え続けるなら、他に選択肢はないと主張します。


And as usual, it is the civilians on both sides who suffer.

苦しむのは双方の一般市民です。
