Amnesty Report Charging Israel with "War Crimes" Unfair and Misleading
New York, NY, May 29, 2003 ... The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today strongly criticized Amnesty International for a newly released report that accuses Israel of "war crimes" while failing to take into account Israel's efforts to defend itself against Palestinian terrorism. Amnesty International's 2002 Annual Report presents a "misleading assessment" of the situation facing Israel.
"Once again, Amnesty International has presented a misleading assessment of the situation in the "occupied territories" and has not reported fairly and even-handedly on Israel," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "Leveling charges of war crimes at Israel renders the term meaningless and serves only to undercut the goals of the human rights movement."
Amnesty International's report "does not take into account that the measures undertaken by the Israeli army are intended to prevent the continuous onslaught of Palestinian terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians," ADL said in a letter to Irene Khan, Secretary General of Amnesty International. "In these difficult times, it is tragic that an organization which could serve to constructively promote reconciliation has abandoned the course of objective, credible advocacy for human rights of all parties which will be essential to really bringing peace closer."
The Amnesty International report accuses Israeli soldiers of using Palestinians as "human shields" and killing Palestinians, including more than 100 children, "in random and reckless shooting." The report terms actions by the Israeli army "war crimes."
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
