Both sides have reached the conclusion that there is no military solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Terror did not defeat Israel, but many on the Israeli right, including Sharon, have understood that Israel cannot continue its occupation of the Palestinian people.
For this reason, the Israeli public is willing to concede many of the settlements.
That is an achievement for the Palestinians from the current round of violence.
At the same time, the feeling has strengthened in Israel that not even a crack can be opened to the return of Palestinian refugees to Israel.

・双方とも、武力では紛争解決が出来ないとわかった。
・テロはイスラエルを屈することはなかったが、
パレスチナ人を支配し続けることは不可能とイスラエル人が悟った。
・それゆえに入植の撤廃については多くのイスラエル人が賛成するようになったが、

交渉過程で、これまで以上に治安／安全保障での要求を強めることになる。

Just as the Palestinians are not willing to rely solely on Sharon's promises, Israel cannot rely on promises by the new Palestinian leaders that everything will be okay on the issues of terror and incitement.

・パレスチナ側がシャロン個人の約束を信じられないのと同様に、
イスラエル側もアッバス個人による「インティファーダ終結宣言」に頼るわけにはいかない。
