Palestinian body approves PM

Mr Abbas has said he will decide on whether he wants the job once parliament decides what powers he would have.
Mr Abbas - also known by his nom de guerre of Abu Mazen - has said he will not accept the post if it is symbolic.
The BBC's Barbara Plett says the indications are that Mr Abbas will the run the Palestinian Authority, while Mr Arafat will remain as overall leader.

Profile: Mahmoud Abbas

Abu Mazen, regarded as a pragmatist, was one of the main initiators of the dialogue with Jewish left-wing and pacifist movements in the 1970s and in the difficult years before negotiations were eventually started between Israel and the Palestinians.

Widely regarded as the architect of the Oslo peace process, he accompanied Mr Arafat to the White House in 1993 to sign the Oslo Accords.

It is his view that: "Everyone should first be granted the right of return, but then we have to sit down and discuss the details that have to be jointly agreed upon and mutually acceptable to both sides."

現実主義者と目され、1970年代からイスラエル左派との対話を始め、
オスロの立役者のひとりでもあった。
また、イスラエル北部サフェドの出身であることで、
難民の帰還権を強く主張しているが、
原則主義者ではなく、パレスチナにもイスラエルにも受け入れられる条件での
解決を目指す、との発言あり。

また、昨年秋の秘密会合で、
この２年間のインティファーダを批判する発言をしたらしい。
