Nusseibeh, Ashrawi among signatories on call to end suicide attacks

Sari Nusseibeh, the head of the PA's Jerusalem file, and Legislative Council member Hannan Ashrawi were among 55 Palestinian public figures who appealed yesterday to Palestinian militants to end suicide bombings.

"We appeal to those who stand behind the military operations to rethink and reconsider these actions, and to stop sending young men to carry out such attacks targeting civilians in Israel," said the document, published in the Al-Quds Palestinian daily.
In the appeal, the public figures, including officials, academics, writers, and community leaders, warned that suicide attacks will not lead the Palestinians to their goal of independence, but will only "increase the number of countries supporting the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people."

They said such attacks are a "gift" to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and the extreme right in Israel "to continue their aggression and attacks against the Palestinian people."
"We do not see any benefit from such attacks, except to widen the chasm of hatred between the two peoples," the full-page advertisement said.
