A ban against foreign media visiting the village of Fanglin was introduced after a 6 March 2001 explosion inside a school killing at least 38 children and four teachers. Police mounted roadblocks around Fanglin village, and at least three foreign journalists were detained for "illegal reporting". The official version of the story, presented by Prime Minister Zhu Rongji, blamed a lone madman who allegedly entered the school with a bag filled with explosives. However, this was contradicted by doctors, local firemen and the local county government spokesman. Parents who lost children in the explosion said their children were forced to make fireworks during lunch breaks.
