Koizumi apologises over war
Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has apologised for his country's wartime record. Speaking at an Asia-Africa summit in Jakarta he acknowledged the damage and suffering caused by Japanese colonial aggression across Asia with "deep remorse". The Chinese President Hu Jintao is in attendance at the conference. Although he did not mention China specifically Koizumi's statement is obviously an attempt to ameliorate the damaged relations between the two Asian mega powers after three weekends of anti-Japanese protests in China. Koizumi is scheduled to meet UN Secretary General Kofi Annan later on Friday to discuss Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
