New Paper rebuts theory that dolphins lack intelligence and their large brains are for heat generation.

A research paper, released in 2006, that suggested that dolphins are not intelligent has received an extensive and detailed rebuttal in a new paper published this week in Biological Reviews.

In the 2006 paper, it was suggested the structure of a dolphin’s brain is not built for complex information processing but instead is an adaptation to life in cold water and actually helps to generate heat.

The research was dismissed by many marine mammal experts as flawed at the time, and this week a new paper published by Lori Marino and other marine experts has gone into to greater details to prove show there is no support for this theory.

The process of science is one in which theories are published, reviewed and challenged by others. Professor Lori Marino of Emory University in the US, an expert in dolphin behaviour and brain anatomy, and one of the authors of this most recent paper, said: the original paper “…flagrantly brushes aside decades of work by a whole generation of well-respected and internationally-known marine mammal scientists whose findings provide no support for its arguments. Moreover, its findings are based on a number of incorrect data values and flawed data analytic techniques. In this paper my colleagues and I have shown that the findings on thermoregulation and brain size are an artefact of body size.”

Mark Simmonds, WDCS Director of Science, said: “The 2006 theory that brain size was to do with heat generation was always rather in-credible and contradicted what other experts are saying. There is no doubt that dolphins have unusual brain structure relative to terrestrial mammals and this reflects millennia of separate evolution. However, you cannot measure intelligence from brain size or anatomy.

“Intelligence is investigated by behavioural studies and there are now many careful scientific studies that have been published that help establish the case that these animals should be regarded as highly intelligent and self aware. The same kind of tests that have helped to establish intelligence in the great apes, for example, have been applied successfully to dolphins.”
