Since September 2004, about 4,000 officers have been killed and 8,000
injured, said Maj. Gen. Joseph Paterson in a teleconference from Baghdad
with Pentagon reporters.

Earlier this year, a spokesman for the general told Congressional
researchers that 1,497 Iraqi police officers were killed and
3,256 wounded in 2005.
Asked about the Sunni perception that the police are dominated by Shiites,
General Peterson said that local police units are meant to reflect
the makeup of the area they are assigned to patrol.
He said the national police force was 75 percent Shia and 25 percent
Sunni, which reflects the ethnic breakdown of the country outside
of Kurdistan, where security is handled by the provincial government.
