Purged Chinese leader "near death"

BEIJING (Reuters) - Zhao Ziyang, purged former chief of China's ruling Communist Party, is lying in a deep coma and could die at any time, a source close to his family says, but Chinese state media kept silent on his condition.

Zhao, now 85, was ousted in 1989 for opposing the army crackdown on the Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests and remains politically taboo 15 years on.
