イラクで日本人拘束

わたしはこの事件の経過をあまり詳しくは知らないし、この事件に関する資料がネット上には少ないのですが・・・
事件について詳細に述べているサイトが一つありました。

これによると、服部君と彼のホームステイ先のアメリカ人の同伴者Webb 　 Haymaker は事件の夜、日本人留学生らのハ

ロウィーンパーティーに行くところだった。二人は服部君を銃で撃ったRodney Peairs さんの家をその開催場所と間

違えた。ハロウィーン向けにきれいに飾ってあったし、彼らの持っていた開催場所の住所が2桁移動して

いて、そのPeairsの家の住所になっていた（？この辺の読解自信なし）から。服部君は最初はドアベルを鳴らしても

出てこないので車に戻ろうとした。でも二人を見て恐がったPeairs の奥さんに「銃を持ってきて」といわれたPeairs

が銃を持って玄関に出てきたところ、服部君がbroken englishでわけを説明しようとさらに近づこうとしたので服部

君に"Freeze！"と言った。それがなんのことかわからなくてさらに近づいてくる服部君に銃を発射してしまったとい

う話のようです。

「旅先での解放感」や「非日常的な体験」はここではあまり関係ないのではないのでしょうか？同伴した地元の若者

も同じように勘違いしたのだし。ホームステイ先のparentsからは「理想的な留学生で環境に合わせることにおいて何

の問題もなかった」という評価もされていた。

They described him as the "ideal" exchange student, one of three that they have hosted at their home in

an upper-middle-class neighborhood of Baton Rouge. Yoshi called them "mom" and "dad" and occasionally

cooked supper for the family. And he had no problem adapting to his new environment. "He was totally open

to this country," said Haymaker.

ただ"freeze"という言葉の意味がわからなかったのと、銃を持った相手が自分を「侵入者」ととらえていることがわ

からなかったのは日本人であるが故の致命的なミスだったと指摘されれば仕方がないのかもしれません。
なお、この事件が起こったところは"upper middle class"の住む静かな郊外だそうです。ここにいる住人がどのくら

い、どんな銃を用意しているのかについての言及はなかったように思います。

このPeairs氏という人物もその判断ミスを批判されているようですし、この事件からアメリカの銃

社会を見直す世論が高まったようです。

Prosecutors argued that Peairs could have avoided the deadly confrontation by merely stepping back inside

his home. It sounds so simple. Lock the door and call the police. Peairs certainly made the wrong choice,

but was it a criminal lapse of judgment? The prosecution would find out how difficult that would be to

Haymaker argues that America's love affair with firearms and its "frontier mentality" led Peairs to grab

the gun, aim and shoot it before asking a single question. "He went into firing position in a quiet,

suburban neighborhood assuming that he would terrorize anything out there that moved," says Haymaker. "He

never imagined that there would be something out there that wouldn't be terrorized."


結局、Peairs氏自身は無罪とされたが、銃は二度と使わないと約束したということです。

Peairs, on the other hand, was completely exonerated. The killing of 16-year-old Yoshi Hattori resulted

only in an apology and a promise from Pears that he would never again use a gun.
