WASHINGTON The Japanese Embassy in Washington has rejected an offer from a U.S. citizen to shoulder part of the airfare expenses the Japanese government plans to ask three former Japanese hostages in Iraq to pay, an embassy source said Monday.

The U.S. citizen, who lives in a Boston suburb, had sent a letter to the embassy to protest against the Japanese government's plan, with a check for $2,000 enclosed, the source said. The embassy returned the check to the American because it cannot accept money from a third party, according to the source. (Kyodo News)
