I think this is very typical of Japanese people in term of thinking characteristics. It often portrays them as narrow-minded people. Those are engraved in their DNA and cannot be changed in hundreds of years. Japanese get scared if somebody say something they cannot linguistically understand.
To respond your point, there is no fair peace settlement without exchanging fights with Japanese. each side wants better terms for the agreement. Looking back at all the so called peace agreements or treaties imposed on Chinese people last century, certainly it is reasonable to justfy your military means to support coming negotiations. You donot have to use it but you need that in whatever negotiations. War is for peace.
Chinese just need to get a deal with Yankees.
