Ex-French FM reveals US-Russian deal to keep Saddam in power

Berlin, Aug 23, IRNA -- Former French Foreign Minister Roland Dumas here Friday said there was a secret American-Russian deal to keep Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in power following his defeat in the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
【ベルリン・８／２３――フランスのローラン・デュマ前外相が金曜（23日）に、米露がサダム・フセインを91年の湾岸戦争敗北後もイラク大統領の座に据え続ける密約を結んでいたと暴露した。】
"It's clear to us today that there was a secret agreement between (former) US President George W. Bush and his Soviet counterpart Mikhail Gorbatchov," Dumas told the daily Berliner Zeitung in an interview.
【「いまや我々には歴然としているが、米国のブッシュ前大統領とソ連のゴルバチョフ書記長との間には密約が存在していた」――デュマ氏は日刊紙『ベルリナー・ツァイトゥング』のインタビューでそう語った。】
"He (Gorbatchov) consented to the liberation of Kuwait on the condition that allied troops were not to march into Baghdad and overthow Saddam Hussein. One cannot speak of a mistake, it was agreed in advance," he added.
【「ゴルバチョフは、連合軍がバグダッドに進軍したりサダム政権を転覆したりしない、という条件付きでクウェート解放に同意した。これは間違いじゃない。事前にそういう合意ができていたのだ」――デュマ氏はそう付け加えた。】
Dumas who was France's Foreign Minister from 1988 through 1993, warned the US against attacking Iraq, saying it would trigger a "political earthquake" not only in the Arab world but also in Europe.
【デュマ氏は1988年から93年末までフランス外相を務めていたが、米国にイラク攻撃を行なってはならないと警告を発していた人物である。そんなことをすればアラブ世界ばかりでなく欧州にも「政治的な激震が起きる」と警鐘を鳴らしていた。】
