Tsunami message draws Nixon advisory

As tsunami aid appeals continue, Attorney General Jay Nixon is warning Missourians not to trust e-mailed solicitations for help.

Nixon on Friday said in a news release that a state office had received e-mail soliciting donations that was merely a scam to separate the generous from their money.

"Americans want to help the people of Southeast Asia who have been impacted by this disaster, and there are many legitimate ways to make certain your donation is helping in the way you intend," Nixon said. "This e-mail scam is not one of those ways, and I want to make certain the good intentions of Missourians are not hijacked by scams like this."

The e-mail was titled "Tsunami Victims Aids Appeal" and claimed to be from a tsunami survivor named Mr. Teh Ho. "Ho" asks that the person who receives the e-mail send donations directly to a bank account at the Korea Exchange Bank in Seoul, South Korea.

Nixon cautioned that there might be various versions of the scam, and he advised that the best way to help victims of the tragedy is to donate to established charities.
