U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) on Friday called on Palestinians to stop "terrorist attacks" against Israelis and told Israel not to destroy the Palestinian Authority (news - web sites).

He issued a statement after speaking to Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) and shortly before Security Council members went into an emergency public debate called by Arab delegates. But U.S. envoys made clear Washington did not want any council resolution or statement as sought by Palestinians.
