RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AFP) - Palestinians were given clearance to cross into Egypt from the southern Gaza Strip for the first time in more than seven weeks
The Rafah border crossing had reopened on January 21 to travellers wishing to enter Gaza from the Egyptian side but until now they had not been permitted to go the other way.

Dozens of Palestinian policemen could be seen checking passengers' bags on Tuesday morning as the first busload crossed the border into Egypt.

The frontier was completely closed after a December 12 attack by Palestinian militants which claimed the lives of five Israeli soldiers.

The reopening of the crossing was approved by Israeli security officials after a meeting with their Palestinian counterparts.
検問所の再開は、パレスチナ当局者との会合の後、イスラエルの保全当局者によって承認された。
Restrictions on crossings between Gaza and Israel have also been eased in recent days.
A statement from the Israeli military said that the decision to reopen the terminal had been taken "as part of a series of measures taken to ease restrictions on the Palestinian population".
"The decision follows the rebuilding of the Rafah terminal, security assessments and measures taken to ensure the protection of those passing through the terminal and the structure itself," it added.
