ATHENS (AFP) - Foreign athletes can be accompanied by armed guards from their countries, but only outside Olympic venues at next month's Games, Greek Public Order Minister Yiorgos Voulgarakis revealed.
オリンピック・スタジアムの外で選手の武装護衛を認めるとVoulgarakis大臣が明らかにした。
"All teams can have their escorts... if these escorts are security personnel from their embassy accredited by the (Greek foreign ministry) for a long time, (they) will get to the stadiums, leave their weapons and enter the stadium," Voulgarakis said Thursday.
武器をスタジアムの外に置くなら、護衛とともに入場ＯＫ。
Voulgarakis had on Wednesday denied a report by the New York Times that Greece had agreed to allow the United States, Britain and Israel to send armed guards to protect their athletes.
大臣は水曜日に、米・英・イスラエルが武装護衛を送ることを否定していた。
According to the report, which an informed source confirmed to AFP on condition of anonymity, Greece had given in to pressure by the three countries to accept presence of their guards.
匿名を条件に消息筋によれば、護衛を受け入れるよう３国から圧力があったという。
Separately, around 400 US Special Forces would be on standby to intervene in the August 13-29 Games in case of a major emergency.
それとは別に、およそ400人の米国特殊部隊が８月13〜29日の間、出動態勢にある。
Greece's leftist parties and Greek media have protested in recent days against what they called "Big Brother" style surveillance of the city for the games by a camera-carrying balloon backing up some 1,000 security cameras on the ground.
