The fiftennth century marked Korea's premodern apogee, in addtion to being a time
when Neo-Confucian reformers reigned almost alone. As a nation and a culture
Korea was far ahead of a Europe that had not yet discovered the New World.
Europe was a stagnant economically and technically, whereas Korea had movable
type long before Gutenberg's celeblated Bible. Its scientists invented a gauge to
measure rainfall in 1442, two hundred years before a similar instrument was devised
in Europe, and made important progress in agronomy. Korea's mathematicians were
advanced, using concepts like negative numbers and polynomial equations centuries
before Europeans did.
