Korean actors and directors are Asia's next wave

Korean cinema's highest grossing film of all time is...no, was...no, will be? With more switches than Leslie Cheung has wardrobe choices, the battle for the Korean box office belt is truly wild. "Wild Beauty" has supplanted "Friend" as Korea's top-grossing film with one million people jamming the turnstiles in six days. And it's not like there wasn't competition. "Planet of the Apes" swung into theaters at the same time, but Beauty slayed the Beasts. This summer is just one long homerun for Korea's domestic box office. And still to come is "Musa: The Warrior" (a Chinese-Korean epic with Zhang Ziyi), which may very well bump off Beauty next month. Korea is Asia's cin?stud right now. From foal to stallion, its found its legs, put on muscle, got frisky, bucked and now it wants out of the stalls. And everyone and their jockey wants along for the ride.

In the stampede, Korean actors and actresses are becoming more familiar to Asian audiences. Jackie Chan's "Accidental Spy" last year saw Min Jeong Kim play what amounts to the Bond-girl role. Choi Min-shik ("Shiri, Happy End") stars in "Failan", a co-production with Hong Kong's It-girl, Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi. Interestingly, Hong Kong producer Johnny To wanted to cast Choi in his latest actioner, "Full Time Killer", which currently tops Hong Kong's box office, but logistics and schedules couldn't be agreed, so instead the role went to Simon Yam. Nevermind. Choi's profile is set to expand with the title role in veteran helmer Im Kwon-taek's "Chwi-hwa-seon", the true story of a 19th century painter, Jang Seung-eop, who evidently brought the notion of celebrity into painting the same way that Whistler later did in the West. Im is Korea's Kurosawa and this film will no doubt play at the Cannes Film Festival 2002. His previous effort "Chunhyang", was the first Korean film to ever compete at Cannes, in 2000.
