Seattle star remains cool in face of 84-year-old record

OAKLAND -- The pressure associated with chasing a Major League record that has lasted more than 80 years must be overwhelming for Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki.
But he hasn't shown it. And the last thing he wants to do is change his daily routine and do something out of the ordinary.

Manager Bob Melvin thought about putting Ichiro in the designated hitter spot in Wednesday night's game against the Athletics to give him a little bit of a "rest", but Ichiro wasn't too keen on the idea.

"He wanted to play in the outfield," Melvin said. "He likes to be part of the flow of the game, which he is accustomed to doing, and it was cold."

Ichiro figured that playing right field would help him stay warmer and hit better. He went 1-for-3, walked and was hit by a pitch.
