I think the movie is good though some parts might have been exaggerated. I went to see the movie 2 days ago. I had been hearing a lot of good remarks about the movie so I decided to see it for myself. I was not disappointed. The movie was made with such beauty and sophistication that I think it would take some time for me to digest its contents and appreciate what the producer was trying to get across to the audience.
I'm not too familiar with Japanese culture, so I'm not sure whether the wife's receiving her husband's killer was a bit exaggerated. But I guess that, by including that part of the movie, the producer was trying to tell the audience of the "kashikosa" or dedication of a Japanese wife to her husband. I first found it quite amazing that the Japanese woman would actually take care of her husband's killer. My first reaction was like, "wow, she's really broad-minded." But then, I thought it might be for her brother that she was "enduring" the pain of doing something that might be against her will. I guess if I were the woman, I wouldn't even want to see the guy or would even have a big argument with my brother. (I'm Chinese (HK) so I don't know too much about Japanese culture.) Anyway, I think the Japanese actress is very pretty! Can anybody tell me more about her?
I think another aspect of Japanese culture that the producer tries to get across to the audience is "honour." I think that is the most important theme in the movie.
Although I am not 100% sure, there might be some parts in the movie that do not reflect the reality in early Meiji Japan. Well, I guess since this is a Hollywood production whose audience is mainly the Americans, it is quite understandable that they might have changed some parts in order to cater to the taste of the Americans. However, overall, I think the movie is very good.
