[NYP] THE BOMB THAT SAVED MILLIONS

New York Post

August 6, 2001 -- Fifty-six years ago today, an American B-29 called
the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. A second bomb
three days later on Nagasaki prompted Japan's unconditional
surrender, ending the most destructive conflict in human history, on
America's terms.

Few at the time questioned President Harry S. Truman's wisdom in
using the devastating new weapon, but revisionist historians and
political activists maintain now - more than a half-century later -
that the atomic bombing of Japan was militarily unnecessary and
morally unacceptable.

Indeed, these historians - many of whom came of age during the
Vietnam era, when trashing America was all the rage in academia -
consider Truman and others who approved the bomb's use to be nothing
less than war criminals.

Nonsense.

Truman's decision came on the heels of the bloody Okinawa campaign,
one of the most savage of the war. Japan's warlords had made clear
that they were prepared to resist an American invasion of the
mainland to the end.

Indeed, Truman and his commanders were convinced that surrender was
impossible without a two-stage invasion: first of Kyushu, on Nov. 1,
1945; second, four months later, of Honshu. Resulting U.S.
casualties were conservatively estimated at half a million -
including 50,000 in the first four months.

And that doesn't even begin to include the number of Japanese
casualties, both military and civilian. In short, despite the
dreadful human toll, the atomic bombings ultimately saved American
and Japanese lives.

Those who claim otherwise fail to understand the feelings of the
time, as described by literary critic Paul Fussell in his famous
essay, "Thank God for the Atom Bomb": "Experience whispers that the
pity was not that we used the bomb to end the Japanese war, but that
it wasn't ready to end the German war."
