なぜ韓国人は、嫌われるのか？

を学習しときながら、

単語力の無さは眼を見張るほどだ。ここ2年ほど受験生をおしえた感想だ(ほんの数人だが）。

小学生から英語を教えても、それに対応する国語がついてこなけりゃ先に進めんな。英語は中学からで十分。

国語のできるわしは、中学生の時に高校の英語は全部済ませたが。ついでに言うとわしの知っている何人かの大卒の韓国人は全部英語は下手。特に書かせるとまったく使い物にならんものを書く。

1,2年前にJ 　 Fooker氏との話に出たアダム・スミスの国富論の原書は中学3年の秋に読んだ。内容は中学生でも理解できる。それほど面白くはなかった。春陽堂版・江戸川乱歩全集の方がはるかにおもしろかったな。単語を覚えるのには役立った。この本で覚えた単語だけで受験英語はじゅうぶんだったな。

おもいだすと、improvement, skill, dexterity, division, labour, repute、judgment, direct, effect, manufacture 　 などはこのとき覚えたんだな。

1954年の東大の英文解釈の入試の一問だ。(家の倉庫にあった本だから、親戚のもんが勉強しとったんだろう）。構文は全くやさしいが、単語がややむつかしいか。昔の入試の方がおもしろかったな。[学問としての英語]が堪能できる。

Patriotims, however much it may be debased, is still patriotism; and although it might be exaggeration to contend that the more debased patriotism becomes, the more patriotic it is reputed to be, it is on the other hand certainly true that a pure and rational patriotism is generally cndemned as a kind of treason. As usual, irreconcilable manings lurk behind the conveneient word. Maｎy of the feelings sanctified by itg are wholly brutish, and one can think of many modern instances of Dr. Johnson's famous saying that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. But apart from these cntemptible hypocricies there is plenty of sincere and honest patriotims which, though turned to base uses, is potentially an inexhaustible suoce of strength of the general good of the cuntry and the world.

この中で一番難しい単語はbaseか。これが、野卑な(debasedと同じ）という意味だということが分からんと訳しようがないな。明治のころ、baseballを、一時、卑球、と訳したのもこの意味をまちがって使ったからだな. 　 これを、野球と訳したのは、正岡子規だったかな。
