Oakland Police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said the gunman entered Oikos University around 10:30 a.m. The school is in an industrial area near the Oakland airport. It shares an address and phone number with the Praise God Korean Church.
Police spokeswoman Cynthia Perkins told USA TODAY that seven people were dead.

TV news scenes from the school showed heavily armed police and at least one armored police vehicle outside the shooting scene.
The AP, citing law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information, said the man was taken into custody in the nearby city of Alameda. He was described as a heavy-set Korean man in his 40s wearing khaki clothing.
"I can confirm that we do have one person who has been detained that we believe is possibly responsible for this shooting," Watson told reporters on the scene.
Bodies were covered and laid out on grass outside the school, and injured victims were seen being loaded into ambulances.
Telephones went unanswered at the school.
According to federal income tax reports, the university was founded as a non-profit organization in 2008 and reported about $1 million in annual revenue, mostly tuition. Jongin Kim was listed as treasurer of the university; his name also appears in online listings as a principal of the church.
The university conducts courses in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine.
Pastor Jong Kim told the Oakland Tribune that the shooter was a nursing student who was no longer enrolled, the AP reported. He did not know whether the man was expelled or dropped out. Kim said he heard about 30 rapid-fire gunshots in the building.
"I stayed in my office," he said.
Deborah Lee, who was in an English language class at the time, said she heard five to six gunshots at first. "The teacher said, 'Run,' and we run," she said. "I was OK, because I know God protects me."
An injured woman said the shooter was a man in her nursing class who got up and shot one person in the chest at point-blank range before spraying the room with bullets, Johnson said. "She said he looked crazy all the time," Johnson said the victim told her, "but they never knew how far he would go."
