TOKYO, April 18 (Reuters) - The following are excerpts from editorials by Japanese newspapers after Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing told Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura on Sunday that China had nothing to apologise after weeks of sometimes-violent anti-Japanese protests across China.

Nihon Keizai business daily:

"The reason that the anti-Japanese demonstrations have expanded to this point is that the Chinese government is avoiding responsibility for such violent and destructive behaviour.

"We again urge the Chinese government to recognise the wrong of such illegal acts and make every effort to prevent a recurrence.

"At a time when Sino-Japanese ties have fallen into the worst situation, both countries must deepen dialogue and increase links links aimed at calming the situation."

The newspaper, noting that it had opposed Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visits to Yasukuni Shrine, where war criminals are honoured along with Japan's war dead, also urged Koizumi to explain his Asian foreign policy.

Yomiuri Shimbun daily:

"Is China willing to improve Sino-Japanese relations aggravated by anti-Japan demonstrations?"

Describing Koizumi's annual visits to Yasukuni shrine and Japan's approval of contentious textbooks as "domestic issues", it said: "Rather, what we should consider is the problem of (China's) 'anti-Japan' patriotic education that contains questionable contents on historical fact."

Asahi Shimbun daily

"We have repeatedly stressed the importance of the history issue and we believe that Japan also has issues on which it should reflect.

"However, the violent actions in the demonstrations have continued and as long as the Chinese authorities maintain their stance which does not recognise their responsibility, our own argument loses its persuasive power.

"There is a reverse wind blowing even for those people who want to confront history and stress ties with China."

Mainichi Shimbun daily:

"It was natural for Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura to seek an apology and compensation for the violence and vandalism.

"It is truly regrettable that China did not change its stance that it has no responsibility for the anti-Japan demonstrations.

"The Chinese leadership should have a firm stance against violent illegal demonstrations and smooth out the environment for dialogue."

Sankei Shimbun daily:

"Isn't there law and order in China? Where is the state's responsibility and dignity?"
