Neurasthenia as a Chinese culture-bound syndrome is
identified with the description of Qi, explained in terms of
emotions (Tung, 1994). Some of the neurasthenia patients
complained excessively about Hwa-Qi caused by the imbalance
between yin and yang in Chinese medicine (Kim,
1992; Rin & Huang, 1989). This illness has not been limited
to Asia. Yugoslavians believed that neurasthenia is caused by
accumulated frustrations and anger toward society (Vladen,
1991). Kleinman and Kleinman (1985) indicated that the
symptoms of two types of neurasthenia in China overlap with
those of depression and anxiety disorders, particularly when
the chief somatic complaints are supplemented with the elicitation
of suppressed psychological symptoms. This kind of
pathological outbreak of anger suggests that neurasthenia
might have the same root as HB. Both conditions might be
socially appropriate symptoms that can be communicated
effectively in both cultural contexts. The prevailing
somatization in neurasthenia and HB might be a means of
expressing misery and despair without stigma.

中国の文化起因症候群たる神経衰弱は、気分・情緒について言われる「気」と内容は同じである（タン・1994年）。神経衰弱患者のなかには、中国医学でいわれる「陰」と「陽」のアンバランスによる気のみだれ(Hwa-Qi -- 化気）を極度に訴える者もいる（キム1992年、リン・フアン1989年）。この病はなにも東洋に限られるものではない。ユーゴスラビア人にも、神経衰弱はフラストレーションの蓄積と社会に対する怒りから発生すると考えている者がある(Vladen 　 1991年）。クライマン(1985年）は、中国の神経衰弱の2つのタイプの症状は、鬱と不安障害のタイプに相当することを示唆する。これは、重大な身体的不具合と精神的な抑圧から生じる症状の顕在化が合体したときに特に顕著となるという。この種の怒りの病的な突発の点で、神経衰弱が火病と同じ病根を持っている可能性が示唆される。この双方の状態は、その文化的な文脈において事実上伝達されうるその社会に特有な症状である。神経衰弱症と火病の主要な身体化は、屈辱感を残さずに自己の惨めさと絶望を表現する手段となりえているのである。(後半のThis 　 kind 　 of以下の表現はあまりよくない。もっとわかりやすく書くべき）。
