《England V Japan Player Ratingst》
【JAPAN】
⑤ Seigo Narazaki〜 Made good saves from Terry and Owen, but spilled Gerrard’s long-range effort to hand England their goal on a plate. 5.
⑥ Keisuke Tsuboi〜 Defended solidly enough down the right. 6.
⑥ Yuji Nakazawa〜Battled hard to limit England after the opening half-hour. 6.
⑥ Tsuneyasu Miyamoto〜 Might have added a goal to a commanding performance at the heart of the Japan defence, but headed wide. 6.
⑦ Alessandro Santos〜 Caused England all kinds of problems down the left and was unlucky not to win a penalty. 7.
⑦ Shinji Ono〜 Showed his class in central midfield to link defence with attack. 7.
⑧ Shunsuke Nakamura〜 The pick of the bunch for Japan, Nakamura was a thorn in the England side playing in the hole behind the front two. 8.
⑦ Junichi Inamoto〜 Combined well with Ono to deny England possession and feed the men ahead of them. 7.
⑥ Akira Kaji〜 Kept Ashley Cole on his toes without ever really threatening. 6.
⑥ Tatsuhiko Kubo〜 Never really troubled Campbell and Terry but worked hard to give his side’s attack a focus. 6.
⑥ Keiji Tamada〜 Again saw too little of the ball to hurt England unduly, although forced Ashley Cole to make a vital challenge inside the penalty area late in the first half. 6.
Substitutes:
⑥ Takayuki Suzuki〜 Added physical presence and made life a little tougher for Campbell. 6.
⑥ Atsushi Yanagisawa〜 Picked up the tempo quickly and almost threaded in Nakamura six minutes after joining the fray. 6
【ENGLAND】
⑥ David James〜 Made two saves from long-range efforts on a relatively quiet night, but was wrong-footed as Shinji Ono equalised. 6.
⑦ Gary Neville〜 Defended solidly and overlapped Beckham well. 7.
⑦ Ashley Cole〜 Defended well and like Neville, got forward to support Steven Gerrard ahead of him. 7.
⑥ John Terry〜 Won his headers and carried the ball well out of defence, although was nutmegged by Santos and will have been concerned to see Tsuneyasu Miyamoto gifted a free header. 6.
⑥ Sol Campbell〜 Predictably won his headers and looked comfortable for much of the game, but will not have been happy at Miyamoto’s chance. 6.
⑦ Frank Lampard〜 Worked hard in the midfield holding role and prospered going forward despite too often being left exposed. 7.
⑥ David Beckham〜 Briefly went through his repertoire of tricks, but his delivery from set pieces was far below his usual standards and he went missing down the right as Japan equalised. 6.
⑧ Steven Gerrard〜 Always available, Gerrard used his range of passing to good effect and fired in the shot from which Owen put England ahead. 8.
⑤ Paul Scholes〜 Missed tackles, gave the ball away, almost conceded a penalty and struggled to impose himself as an attacking force. 5.
⑥ Michael Owen〜 Worked hard throughout but saw too little of the ball in the areas in which he thrives. 6.
⑤ Wayne Rooney〜 Involved only fleetingly and almost blotted his copybook when he petulantly threw an arm at Ono. 5.
