Korea Make History, Japan Just History June 19, 2002 13:22:39

It was a day of goodbyes and emphatic hellos at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan as generous hosts Japan took a proud, final bow, and Korea fired back at the venerable Italians to secure a place in history for the "Red Devils" in an extra time, golden goal thriller amid a see of writhing red.
In the day's first clash the two opposing bosses were a study in contrast as passionate, rallying Turk Senol Gunes was on his feet for the entire match, outside of the dugout braving the rain-swept afternoon and ruining his finely tailored suit in the process. Philippe Troussier, meanwhile, sat still under his covering rarely bursting out with the fire that defined his counterpart. And at the end of the day, only one of our Asian hosts and their foreign boss headed for home. Not a long trip, but surely an arduous one filled with self-doubt and bitter tears.
The Japanese never found much rhythm on the day, as the brash and physical Turks ultimately took them to task. Led at the back by the ferocious Alpay Ozalan, the stoic Europeans from the extreme southeast of the continent held on to an early 1-0 lead to seal the night and earn a spot in the last eight for the first time in their turbulent history by the slimmest of margins.
After the match, an entire nation shed tears of anguish with hopes dashed cruelly. No one cried harder than Koji Nakata as his poor pass led directly to Davala's headed goal as the Turks danced for joy in a wet, suddenly silent Miyagi Stadium.
And at the other end of the day an entirely different and decidedly more inspiring fate awaited our Korean friends. A man-made sign in the crowd read "Again 1966," and "Porta del Infierno," or "Welcome to Hell" in Italian (a greeting borrowed from their Turkish friends at the Ali Sami Yen stadium in Istanbul). And it was 1966 all over again as the "Red Devils" made history coming from behind to make the Italians pay with a contrasting cocktail of ambition, youthful exuberance, and sheer footballing honesty.
A flicked header in the 117th minute by the gifted Ahn Jung-hwan put the Azzurri to the sword and sent an entire nation into pure, unadulterated rapture, over 100 minutes after failing to convert from the spot.
And as newborn powers Turkey march stone-faced and confident into the quarter-finals along with their ecstatic, upstart mates Korea, young Japan feel the sharp pangs of dashing disappointment and failure for the first time as co-hosts, while Italy could again have a rotten-tomato bouquet waiting for them back home.
