Hello, nmo03
First of all, may I ask you about yourself? Since the following questions are a bit
of personal character, you of course do not have to answer them if you don't like.
1. Do you understand Japanese language or do anyone around you help you read
messages uploaded in japanese in this forum?
2. Are you staying in Japan now?
3. Did you sometimes return to your native country? If you did, I'm interested
hearing about your experience in Iran.
Now your questions.
It's not so easy to tell whether average Japanese are well informed about world affairs.
As to American people, I agree with you. When I stayed in US, I felt the same way. Most of
the people there showed very little interest in the rest of the world. For the most people
their concerns are domestic and local.
As to Japanese, I hope we are a bit more informed about the world affairs in general.
The truth is, unfortunately, the world for most of Japanese means USA and Western Europe.
Maybe I could add to the list such neighbouring countries as Korea, China and some of
the ASEAN countries as new entries.
We, Japanese are poorly informed about other countries outside the above list. I'm afraid
that many people here cannot distinguish Iran from Iraq. Only two students out of 10
who were around me knew that an Iranian woman had got a Nobel Prize this year. Even when we
hear news on Middle East and other places, the news often come from US and Europe.
That's one reason that I'm eager to hear from you.
