Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas pledged publicly in Sharm e-Sheikh Tuesday to put an end to four years of violence, and in a private meeting, expressed their determination to make these declarations stick this time.

"Today, in my meeting with Chairman Abbas, we agreed that all Palestinians will stop all acts of violence against all Israelis everywhere, and Б in parallel Б Israel will cease all its military activity against all Palestinians anywhere," Sharon declared, speaking in Hebrew at the end of the summit. "We hope that today we are starting a new period of hope."

His declaration came after that of Abbas, who stated in Arabic: "We have agreed... on and end to all acts of violence against Palestinians and Israelis, wherever they are."

Sharon, in a two-hour meeting with Abbas, which began with a warm handshake and broad smiles, invited Abbas to his Negev farm for their next meeting.

"I have many things I want to raise with you, but now is not the time," Abbas told Sharon. He also invited Sharon to meet him in Ramallah, an idea that Sharon's spokesman, Ra'anan Gissin, said would be seriously considered.

Upon returning to Israel Tuesday evening, Sharon scheduled a Thursday meeting of his mini-cabinet of seven ministers to discuss the summit and a continuation of the talks with the Palestinians.

Israeli and Palestinian security commanders were to meet Wednesday to prepare the handover of Jericho, the first on a list of five West Bank towns, said Palestinian negotiator Hassan Abu Libdeh.

Israel's ministerial committee on prisoners was to meet on Sunday to discuss the release of some 500 Palestinian prisoners, Sharon's spokesman said.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Egypt and Jordan would return their ambassadors to Israel after a four-year absence, possibly within "a matter of days." The issue of the ambassadors' return was not mentioned in any of the public speeches.
