This is the most dangerous tactic the Japanese whalers have employed to date. Tossing iron grappling hooks into the inflatable boat that are tied off to the harpoon vessel. This causes the hook to rip through the boat ripping the seats and damaging equipment and motors and puncturing the boats. Two crew were struck with the hooks and injured but if any of the hooks had caught on clothing or in the bodies of crewmembers they would have been ripped out of the small boats or the boats could have been ripped apart.
