Today was a sad day in Taiji. We watched the boats brining in a large pod of dolphins. Close to the entrance of the harbor, we could see a part of the pod
breaking away and veering South. 5-7 of the banger boats chased after them while the rest continued to drive the rest of the pod into the harbor entrance and
into the cove. They were fighting really hard refusing to go into the cove several times. Eventually the killers managed to get them cordoned off in the
cove. Initial estimated number of dolphins was between 30-50 dolphins. The killers immediately after that came into the killing cove and started to drive the
dolphins underneath the tarps. First skiff left with 1 alive dolphin on it. After that 2 more skiffs (very low in the water from the weight) left with dead
dolphins covered with green tarps. From old Taiji photo's I could see that it is possible to load up to 15 dolphins onto one skiff. The gutting barge was not
used today. The dead dolphins were taken to the butcher house. The killers have build a tunnel-like structure covered with tarps. The skiffs stop underneath
the tarps and unload the dolphins. We could not see any blood coming out of the butcher house. After analyzing the footage the count of the dolphins are
between 25-30. All were killed accept for the one that was taken captive. The captive dolphin was immediately loaded onto a truck and taken away.
The rest of the pod that broke away managed to escape.
