＜スジイルカ＞
夏の分布に見られる緯度のギャップと、捕獲歴、外洋／沿岸密度ギャップ
の比較により、西部北太平洋のスジイルカには少なくとも３つの系群がある
と想定される(Kasuya and Miyashita, 1989; International Whaling
Commission, 1992)。
一つの系群は北緯30°以南であり、今ひとつは東経145°から少なくとも180°
までで北緯30°以北、もうひとつが日本沿岸で北緯30°と42°の間である。
これら想定されているそれぞれの系群の推定個体数は；南外洋ストックが
52,682（CV＝0.95）；北外洋ストック497,725 (CV＝0.18) ；沿岸ストック
が19,631 (CV ＝0.70)である(Miyashita, 1993)。
スジイルカの日本海域での総捕獲数は表12に示した。1958年以前の伊豆沿岸
の統計は断片的でありほとんどの年に関して不完全である。
Kasuya (1985a)は1961年から1983年にかけての伊豆漁業統計を分析した。
この期間では二つのチームが同じ漁具を使い続けて操業していたが、
6,000頭以上から数100へという統計的に有意な減少が見られた。
これは海洋学的条件の変動によっては説明できない。粕谷はまた平均的
出産条件の低下、平均出産間隔の4.0年から2.8年への短縮、雌の性成熟年齢
の9.7歳から7.2歳への低下を示した。これは個体数密度の低下で起る
と期待される事柄である（Kasuya, 1985a）。
伊豆沿岸のスジイルカ捕獲数は1980年以前には太地より多かったが、
この年に太地の追込み漁が伊豆を上回った。しかし太地の捕獲数も
近年年間1,000頭程度に低下しており、捕獲枠で許可されたレベルを
下回っている。
以上の変化から、日本の追込み漁はスジイルカ沿岸系群を第二次世界
大戦後のレベルの10％以下に枯渇／低減させたとわれわれは結論する。
＜Striped dolphins＞
There are assumed to be at least three stocks of this species
in the western North Pacific, based on the latitudinal gap
observed in the summer distribution and the comparison of
catch history and offshore/inshore density differences
(Kasuya and Miyashita, 1989; International Whaling
Commission, 1992): one stock south of 30°N; one from
145°E to at least 180° and north of 30°N; and one in
Japanese coastal waters between 30° and 42°N. The
abundance estimates for these putative stocks are: 52,682
(CV = 0.95) for the southern offshore stock; 497,725 (CV
= 0.18) for the northern offshore stock; and 19,631 (CV =
0.70) for the coastal stock (Miyashita, 1993).
The total catch of this species in Japanese waters is
shown in Table 12. Catch statistics for the Izu coast are
fragmental and incomplete for most years before 1958.
Kasuya (1985a) analysed the statistics of the Izu fishery for
the 23 years from 1961 to 1983, when the fishery was
operated by two teams using constant equipment, and
found a statistically significant decline from over 6,000 to a
few hundred. This could not be explained by variations in
oceanographic conditions. He also indicated decreases in
the average calving condition, a decrease in the average
calving interval from 4.0 to 2.8 years and a decrease in
female age at sexual maturity from 9.7 to 7.2 years. This
would be expected to occur with a decline in population
density (Kasuya, 1985a).
The catch of this species on the Izu coast was greater
until 1980 when it was exceeded by the drive fishery at
Taiji. However, the latter catch has also shown a decline in
recent years to a level of about 1,000 per year, below the
level permitted by the quota.
From the above changes we conclude that the Japanese
drive fishery has depleted the coastal stock of striped
dolphins to less than 10% of its post World War II level.
