After meeting Mr Aso, Mr Smith told the ABC he raised the issue of Japan's whaling in the Southern Ocean.

"I also made the point that the Japanese whaling fleet has sailed again," he said.

He says he warned Mr Aso of the possibility of a clash between anti-whaling activists and the Japanese fleet during the hunt.
