Japan claims it won't oppose Alaska subsistence hunts this time

When the International Whaling Commission votes in Anchorage late this month, Japan won't try to stop Eskimo whaling, said Joji Morishita, an alternate commissioner for Japan.

In spring 2002, a Japanese-led coalition nixed the Eskimo bowhead quota. But a second ballot later that year, with Japan and other countries backing down, awarded Alaska and Russian subsistence whalers 75 annual strikes between 2003 and 2007. Alaska Natives usually take about 51 whales a year.

The five-year bowhead quota is up for renewal this year, said Morishita. As long as the scientific committee, as expected, says whaling won't harm the bowhead population, there will be no showdown, he said.
