「愛国心」(patriotism)と「報道」(journalism)

ＢＢＣという会社は偉大な会社だな〜。真似はできない。
また、ＢＢＣという放送会社の存在を許容している英国という国も大変な国だ。

「愛国心」と「報道」という課題は、戦時中は、メディアは「政府支持」一辺倒になるのは、やむを得ないかという
諦めの気持ちもあるが。

しかし、日本の経験でも終戦前の、新聞（朝日も毎日も）が政府（大本営）の宣伝紙になってしまった、苦い経験もあり、
それを「後になって」批判できるが、当のその（戦時下）時に、ジャーナリズムとしての「客観性」という
ものを出せるか、というのは報道人にとっても、一般国民にとっても難しい課題だ。

U.S. broadcaster's coverage of the Iraq war was so unquestioningly patriotic and so lacking in impartiality that it threatened the credibility of America's electronic media, the head of the British Broadcasting Corp. said Thursday.

BBC Director General Greg Dyke singled out for criticism the fast-growing News Corps. Ltd.'s Fox News Channel, owned by media baron Rupert Murdoch, and Clear Channel Communications Inc., the largest operator of radio stations in the United States.

"Personally, I was shocked while in the United States by how unquestioning the broadcast news media was during this war," Dyke said in a speech at a University of London conference.

If Iraq proved anything, it was that the BBC cannot afford to mix patriotism and journalism. This is happening in the United States and if it continues, will undermine the credibility of the U.S. electronic news media."

Dyke singled out Fox News, the most popular U.S. cable news network during the conflict, for its "gung-ho" patriotism," saying "We are still surprised when we see Fox News with such a committed political position."

「米国の放送会社のイラク（戦）報道は非常に議論の余地の無いほど「愛国的」であってまた公平・不偏（性）に欠け、米国の電子メディアの信憑性を脅かした。」とＢＢＣの会長は述べた。

ＢＢＣ会長Greg Dykeは、急速に成長している News Corps.社のFox News Channel（メディア王、 Rupert Murdochに所有されている）及び Channel Communication社（米国におけるラジオ局の最大の運用者である。）を批判の対象として挙げた。

「個人的体験として、米国滞在中報道ニュース・メディアがこの戦争中に、何の疑問も持たないでいることにショックを受けた。」とDykeはロンドン大学のある会議でのスピーチで述べた。

「もしイラク戦が何かを意味するとすれば、ＢＢＣは愛国心とジャーナリズムを混ぜこねることはできないということだ。（しかし、）こういうこと（混ぜこね）は米国では生じているし、これが続けば、米国の電子ニュース・メディアの信憑性を損ねるだろう。」

Dyke氏は「イラク戦中最も人気のあった米国ケーブル・テレビ・ニュース・ネットワークである、Fox Newsをその熱烈な「愛国心」ゆえに、名指しした。我々はFox News社がこれほど政治的立場に傾倒しているのを見て、今でも驚いている。」と語った。
