Hyde grew up in Chicago as an Irish-Catholic Democrat.ハイド氏はアイルランド系カソリックの民主党員としてシカゴで成長した。 He began having doubts about the Democrat Party in the late 1940s;1940年代後半に民主党に疑いを持ち始め by 1952, 1952年には 　 he had switched parties党を替え and backed Dwight D. Eisenhower for president. アイゼンワーの大統領選の援護をした。

In 1974, longtime GOP Rep. Harold Collier retired from the suburban 6th Congressional District. Hyde ran for Collier’s vacated seat, winning with 53 percent of the vote.

Chairman Hyde was married to Jeanne Simpson Hyde for 45 years until her death in 1992.1992年に無くなったジーンシンプソン夫人とは45年の結婚生活を送った。 They have four children4人の子どもがおり and four grandchildren.孫も4人いる
