Eastwood was surprised by how little younger Japanese people now know about the war.
“It’s not taught in schools,” he says. “None of my actors in Letters knew anything
about the Battle of Iwo Jima. I thought it was important to tell that history for Japan,
because these are people who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
I think it’s also important internationally, because it’s important to realise that
war is a futile exercise at best, and people are trying to kill one another who,
under other circumstances, could be extremely friendly.”
