French writer Pierre Loti expresses his utter dislike for all things Japanese in the book, Japoneries d'automne, which was published in 1885. He views the Japanese as ugly people cursed with an indescribable smell that is extremely unpleasant and labels them as the yellow race. However, his trips to different monuments and landscapes in the Japanese countryside has has managed to capture his admiration, affection and even, contentment.

彼は日本人の表現しようのない匂い（たぶん、漬物だろう）から、醜い人々「イエローフェイス」と呼んだ。しかし、日本各地を旅行してみると、その美しい歴史ある建造物（朝鮮には一切ない）に魅了され、尊敬をし、遂には溺愛し、満足を得るに至った。
