キング牧師は公民権法（Civil Rights Act）の制定に奔走し、その後もベトナム戦争反対運動に立ち上がったが志半ばで68年4月4日、メンフィスで凶弾に倒れた。
80年、スティーヴィー・ワンダーがアルバム 『ホッター・ザン・ジュライ』 を発表。そこにキング牧師の誕生日を国民の休日にするための応援歌「ハッピー・バースデイ」が収録され、83年にキング牧師の誕生日が国民の休日に決定したのである
