The National Geographic called the waters in between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, the “East Sea” and the “Sea of Japan”, according to Atlas of the World a publication firm of U.S.
The change in the names marks the recognition of South Korea's requests. South Korea initiated a campaign requesting the replacement of the term “Sea of Japan” with “East Sea, ” stating that the previous name was applicable only recently following Japan's colonization of Korea.
During a meeting between President Roh Moo-hyun and Korean residents in South Korea, professor Lee Jin-myung of University of Lyon presented the atlas in which it had published the dual names of Dokdo and Takeshima for the islets in the East Sea.
Published in the atlas, Dokdo (Takeshima) is "administered by South Korea and claimed by Japan." Additionally, the strait lying between South Korea and Japan is stated as “Korea Strait (Tsushima Strait)”.
"I see National Geographic has accepted South Korea's demand the Sea of Japan also be called East Sea. But it has also accepted Japanese demands that Dokdo and Korea Strait be additionally named Takeshima and Tsushima, respectively," professor Lee said.
