In Japan, there is no nationally standardized text book and schools can choose text books. People assume that most of the schools will choose appropriate text books and reject extreme ones.
I think that it is not well known in China and Korea that Japanese schools have a freedom to choose appropriate text books among many choices.

The biggest problem of the Japanese government is that they don’t answer criticisms in a logical manner.

The Japanese government should explain that Japanese schools have a freedom to choose appropriate text books among many choices.
It is also important to explain that the Japanese history education focuses on the ancient times and on the good relationship between Japan and China in the past.
Everything needs a balance. If Chinese students do not know that Japanese school education puts an emphasis on the long good relationship between Japan and China, one must explain. In general, Japanese school education gives students favorable views of China. It is a mistake to hastily conclude that Japanese text books are all about whitewashing the past.
All in all, Japanese text books are relatively factual and I can see very little hints of the government try to hide Japan’s past.

It is also important to mention that Japanese schools are very open to show the Japan’s aggressions in the past regardless of what the government says.
I still remember that there were a lot of books in my school libraries (public school) about brutal acts of Japanese soldiers during WW II.
I guess those things are not well known in China.
I think that people in China assume that public schools can only follow what the government says, but it is not the case in Japan.

The idea of “silence is gold” won’t work in international relationships.
