I have a friend from Hong Kong, and probably she is much older than you (assuming that you're really 17).
She lamented about the gradual, underwater change happening in Hong Kong society, when I asked her if there was any change there.
Because you are still young, you do not know so much about the Hong Kong society before the return to mainland China.
It's your freedom to express your attachment to your country, but it does not necessarily mean that everybody is the same. Besides, patriotism is the product of education, which Japanese government also try to instill into the school children today.
Chinese people may perceive it as leaning towards right. Patriatism is often linked with ethnocentrism and governmental control. Learn more about what Japanese education went through before and during WW2, if you want.
