While China is against Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, it is in favour of Germany playing greater roles in the UN and other multilateral organisations. Japan is China's neighbour. Were it prepared to draw lessons from history and reflect on its crime of waging wars of aggression, would China have decided to support Germany instead of it?

However, he can see from what Mr Wen said in India that the Chinese government's position is quite in keeping with the anger Chinese people have expressed. The whole reason why Sino憂apanese disputes have escalated and Sino憂apanese relations have sharply worsened is that the Japanese authorities have taken provocative approaches to dealing with disputes over history and real interests. It is right and proper for Chinese people to have roared with anger at Japan. It is right and proper for Beijing to have given Tokyo strongly謡orded retorts with a view to safeguarding China's interests and the nation's dignity.
