Germany has won its neighbours' respect because it has faced what the Nazis did. The country has learned that "one does not lose friends with a sensitive and self幼ritical approach to one's own history but rather wins them".
Shroeder's remarks serve as excellent advice for Japan. When he was on a visit in India, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said expressly China would not support Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, for only countries that would respect history, would courageously assume responsibility for history and could win respect in Asia and other parts of the world could play a major role in world affairs. What Premier Wen said is on just grounds and with restraint.
