You can give me a million reasons why "Shina" is not a derogatory word, but Chinese people will still think that it is a derogatory word. This is the same as Chinese people calling Japanese "wo-ren." I can show you all the ancient documents in whichthe word "wo-ren" was used. However, I'm sane and considerate enough to realize that calling Japanese "wo-ren" is a great disrespect so I never call Japanese "wo-ren." This is not a matter of fact or history; it is a matter of courtesy and "marketing."You must think from the point of view of the other side. To summarize that in an English phrase, we can say "to stand in the person's shoes."

It seems that you think Taiwan should thank Japan for building roads and railroads. Do you know thatyou are the kind of person that Taiwanese people hate? My Taiwanese people told me that the arrogance of the Japanese make them sick. They may think that you have good technology, but let me tell you that people have dignity. You must respect even thepeople you have conquered. If you think that since you have "administered" place X before and hold people of place X in contempt, your cannot possibly become a power. Korea has adopted a great deal of Chinese culture since ancient times (Japan also),Chinese people have never held Korean people in contempt. We think that Korean people are tough and patriotic. These are some aspects that I think Chinese people should learn from Korean people. I have never had the thought of treating Korea as a littlebrother just because it has been colonized by China a long time ago.

I don't know whether the majority of the Japanese people think the same way you do about Taiwan. You can think whatever you want, and I won't care. It is your brain and I have nocontrol over it. However, if Japanese people continue to think this way, it's someday going to end. The Japanese birth rate has dropped to a very low level now. To maintain the current level of economic output, Japan must import foreign labour. Holdingforeigners in contempt, refusing foreigners to go to 温泉, forcing ethnic Koreans to hide their identity are not the correct way to do it. Who's going to come to your country and be willing to contribute to your society? Although China has many socialproblems, at least the minorities (e.g. ethnic Koreans) can proudly say they are ethnic Koreans and know how to speak Korean. Having an open mind is important.
